Getting rid of bad breath

Posted by Dental News Team On November - 20 - 2009

Mouthwash, disinfectant rinses, Odol, Meridol and chewing gum can’t really get rid of bad breath forever !

First, you have to figure out whether you are dealing with a case of bad breath coming from the mouth (foetor ex ore) or the respiratory tract (halitosis)!

A bad smell coming from the respiratory tract (halitosis) may be caused by illnesses of the

  • lungs
  • esophagus
  • stomach
  • liver
  • or systemic illnesses such as Diabetes Mellitus

Mouthwash, even if it is the „best on the market“ won’t help at all. You need to treat the causes, the diabetes or the stomach ulcer etc.

If the smell is coming from your mouth (foetor ex ore), mouthwash can only cover this up for a while, because this is simply a symptom, while the smell may actually be caused by

Once a diagnosis has been made, the next step is treating the cause, the symptom of „bad breath“ will then go away automatically.

A good dentist knows about these factors, mouthwash only empties out your pocketbook but does not ultimately solve your problem!

From symptom-oriented medicine to preventive care – or not?

Posted by Dental News Team On November - 19 - 2009

Researchers are pleading for a paradigm shift in medical practice!

PharmakonzernPredictive medicine means intervening before it is too late, before the first (and possibly irreversible) complaints appear (also known as preventive medicine or preventive care).

A medical professional from the University of Bonn recently published a book on advances in research in this area. However promising the results may appear, they seldom make it into clinical diagnosis.

“Promising research results cannot be left to gather dust in drawers, without benefiting patients”, this professor of the university clinic in Bonn and  publisher of the book “Predictive Diagnostics and Personalized Treatment” knows what she’s talking about: her list of publications consists of over 100 articles in the area of predictive medicine. She even holds a patent to a test which diabetics can use to determine whether they at risk of developing a certain eye disease.

This medical professional is not the only one who is concerned: recently, the “European Association for Predictive, Preventive & Personalised Medicine” was founded in Brussels. Olga Golubnitschaja is the General Secretary of this organisation, which works together with health insurance companies, politicians and the pharmaceuticals industry to promote a paradigm shift: away from the usually expensive and inefficient treatment of symptoms, to preventing them altogether. A person who knows that they are at risk of developing a certain disease can do something about it: for example by a change in diet, or exercise, or medical check-ups. Or simply by a course of preventive treatment.

The problem with this “new” medicine, however, is that many companies make less money on it, the best patients you could wish for are chronically ill patients. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, arterio-sclerosis, obesity – they’re the ones who make the pharmaceuticals companies rich.

If everybody were healthy, some managers would be out of a job. Only you can make a change – because pharmaceuticals companies definitely aren’t going to, as you can see here!

Globuli, homeopathic, Schuessler salts

Posted by Dental News Team On November - 19 - 2009

Globuli, homeopathic, Schuessler salts are everywhere these days – all-natural products or just another marketing gag?

homöopathieGranted, traditional medicine has lost its appeal in recent years, mainly due to the fact that many medical experts „buy“ their titles through the yellow press.

Medical research is not always as clearly organized as other scientific areas.

But medicine is catching up, as shown by the term evidence-based medicine.

Because of the sorry state of affairs of„academic“ medicine, „alternative medicine“ – the key terms being homeopathic, gentle medicine, complementary medicine, natural healing, kinesiology,  traditional Chinese medicine, etc.; has been gaining ground among patients who need help.

Why medicine should not be split up this way, and instead the same guidelines should apply whenever people receive treatment, is shown by this video!

Dinner – bad for your teeth?

Posted by Dental News Team On November - 18 - 2009

Getting fat because you eat dinner?

dickEating late does not necessarily make you fat, but it’s still not good for your teeth and figure.

Studies show that people who skip breakfast (and usually eat late) tend to eat high-calorie foods during the day.
Moreover, people who eat late also tend to skip brushing their teeth in the evening, which causes plaque to build up.

This proves the old adage: breakfast alone, lunch with a friend, leave your dinner to your enemy!

The ear of the dentist

Posted by Dental News Team On November - 16 - 2009

Always talk into your dentist’s right ear instead of their left!

ohr_zahnarztWhether your dentist lives in London, Dublin, NY or wherever, no matter which rating you’ve read here, always talk into your dentist’s right ear!
Requests heard through the right ear are more likely to be heard and granted.
This is because sounds coming into the right ear are processed by the left side of the brain, and the left side contains the area involved in language comprehension and establishing contacts.

The left ear, on the other hand, is responsible for identifying dangerous or negative sounds. Studies have proved this!

Armed with this knowledge, we hope you soon have a bis smile on your face – your Dental News Team!
