Toothache after root treatment

Posted by Dental News Team On August - 18 - 2009

You go to your dentist with a toothache and get root canal treatment. Afterwards the toothache is still there – is this normal, was the dental treatment correct?

-
Yes and no!

-

wurzelbehandlung

You will still be able to feel toothache for about another 3 days – why?
Well, this is because the dentist cleans the inside of the tooth using special instruments which are long and may irritate the bone at the tip of the root (red). This makes you feel a toothache for about another 3 days – so it isn´t a root canal pain.
When might it be necessary to go to your dentist again? Well, if the pain intensifies and/or starts to throb instead of being dull and/or if you develop a fever/swelling.

Is Bleaching dangerous to your teeth?

Posted by Dental News Team On August - 15 - 2009

Modern bleaching methods (tooth brightning) do not harm your teeth if made by a professional dentist!

Modern bleaching uses methods that are less abrasive to dental enamel than, for example, freshly squeezed citrus juices, but it can still be dangerous!
Bleaching itself is not dangerous, only if it is not performed properly!

bleaching-vergleichsbild1Office bleaching involves the use of lamps or lasers.
Patients are told that light activates bleaching gel. This is wrong!
Lamps just dry out your teeth. While this does make them look whiter right after bleaching, after a few days your teeth will again absorb moisture, which will once again make them look darker.

This “drying out effect” only holds for a short while, but your teeth can be damaged.

-

Modern office bleaching does not require “light activation”, the lamps are just a marketing gag!

A responsible dentist will check the status of your fillings, maybe even clean your teeth, and then you will go on your way with a bright smile!
Baking soda does not work well for bleaching, and it may even damage your gums.
Baking soda irritates the mucuous membrane and the gums, resulting in painful inflammations.
You can have a gleaming white Hollywood smile if you want. You just have to get it done professionally. Then you can prevent your enamel from getting damaged.

Cost of braces

Posted by Dental News Team On August - 15 - 2009

The trend is not only white teeth, but teeth as straight as a picket fence!

-
zahnspangenartenBraces are not harmful and if applied properly, correcting tooth displacements can have a positive effect on the health of your teeth!

-
You should definitely go to an orthodontist for treatment  – a doctor who specializes in braces.

-

-

-

Here are the most common questions on the topic of braces!

-

Can you get braces at any age?

Basically yes, but the older a person gets the more difficult it is to move teeth.
-

Fixed braces or not?

Because they are still growing, removable braces can be used for young people. A regular stimulus is enough the move teeth in the right direction, braces need not be worn permanently.
If a person has finished growing, then fixed braces are necessary, since the teeth need constant pressure to get them to move.
-

Invisible braces?
Invisible braces such as e.g. Invisalign ® can be used to correct displacements, but it is difficult to treat cuspids this way.
-

Braces and kissing, a contradiction in terms?
You canalways kiss, no matter what type of braces you wear, you do not need to be a tongue acrobat! Eating and laughing is also possible with modern braces.
-

Cost of braces!
In Europe, health insurance companies usually pay a small part of the cost, depending on the severity of displacement. In the USA the patient pays everything – unless they have additional coverage. Ask your orthodontist about the exact cost.
-

Duration?
Usually, 2 years are enough to correct displacements, anything taking longer actually requires an operation. In these operations not the teeth but the jaws are brought into proper placement in relation to each other.

Cost of dentures

Posted by Dental News Team On August - 15 - 2009

There are dentures and there are non-dentures!

wasserglasEverybody knows the typical glass of water on the night-stand with Granny’s dentures floating in it.

Thanks to dental implants, it is now possible to get fixed dentures, but not all implants are affordable right away, as fixed implants cost money – so what can you do while you’re saving up?

Don’t despair, a good-quality total denture can work very well – find out more on this topic in the dental video lexicon!

-

Here are some tips and tricks on getting used to your dentures:

-

The first few days

Don’t be alarmed it your dentures squeeze or itch the first couple of days. Your mucous membrane has to get used to them, just like your feet have to get used to the hot sand at the beach. Eat soft foods and read out loud out of a book, this will help your muscles to “comprehend” the dentures.

-

Pressure points
If you develop pressure points from your dentures, you should immediately go see a dentist, who can then check if these are static or dynamic pressure points. If the pressure points are dynamic, you will need a new set of dentures. Find out more on this topic here!

-

Cleaning dentures – proper care
Dentures are worn for 23 hours and cleaned for 1 … meaning: after eating you should rinse out your mouth, and your dentures, with clean water. Clean the dentures with soap in the evening. Do not use abrasives such as e.g. toothpaste. The surface of the dentures should remain smooth, it is much easier for bacteria to settle onto rough surfaces. Leaving the dentures to soak overnight is also bad for their surface.
You should scrub your gums and tongue in the evening using a washcloth. Your tongue usually rubs against your gums, removing old mucuous membrane, this is not the case with artificial gums.

-

Did you know ?
With only 2 implants in your upper jaw you can do without artificial gums altogether  – ask your dentist or watch a video on this topic!

-

The cost of dentures
Most insurance companies pay a part of the total cost, how much you have to pay yourself varies from country to country. Ask your dentist. Additional costs for ceramics, transparent gums or metal grids can now be avoided, as modern high-quality plastics makes these extras unnecessary.

bad teeth part two

Posted by Dental News Team On August - 15 - 2009

zahnkontakteYesterday you read about bad teeth, and why some people have fillings in their upper jaw, especially in the spaces between their teeth – shown by the blue lines in the picture.

-

-

-

-

-

zahnkontakte2There is a reason for this: the fact that the upper teeth have wide contact surfaces (the blue lines). The lower teeth have smaller contact surfaces (the blue dots). A toothbrush can usually get through the lower teeth – but not the upper teeth.
-

-

-

-

This is why cavities tend to develop between the upper teeth, and if the fillings reach the dental nerve, you end up needing a root canal. Usually followed by a crown. Use an oral irrigator and/or dental floss, and clean your front teeth, as well as all other teeth, from the back!
